Ancient Philosophy

This class studied ancient Greek philosophy post-Aristotle. Philosophy in ancient times looked very different than contemporary studies. The goal of philosophy was to assist in living a good life - the tenets of philosophy were apparent in every facet of life. The study of ethics was much less about right versus wrong, and more about what the virtuous action was so to better cultivate happiness. In this course, we studied the three major schools of thought that emerged as competitors to or in result of Aristotle's Lyceum school. These were the Stoics, Pyrrhonian Skeptics, and Epicurists. They each had complex and nuanced views for what the world was metaphysically like, which in turn influenced their proposed ethics.
