Metaethics

Metaethics takes a big-picture approach towards the field of ethics. It is interested in how to best go about doing ethics. Must moral statements be true or false, or do they simply describe our current emotions and opinions? Do objective moral truths exist at all? Are we compelled to act morally? If so, where does this motivation come from? As implied by the name, this field bridges the gap between ethics and metaphysics. What must the world be like for objective moral truths to exist within it, and what would the world look like without moral truths?
