Metaphysics

Metaphysics is the study of what is and what is not. In philosophy, we talk about cases of possible or impossible scenarios. Something may be physically possible, logically possible, or metaphysically possible. Most metaphysical questions are interested in actions that are physically/logically impossible, but may still be metaphysically possible. We cannot split our worlds into two, make hundreds of alternative realities, or have a universe comprised only of two identical objects. However, our analyses of such instances can give us an important framework with which to approach more relatable topics, like that of self and change. Metaphysics can be a hard field to enter, as all the subject matter is very abstract, and seems to have no basis in reality. In metaphysics, we examine problems of identity, space, time, causality, necessity, and being. The conclusions drawn from metaphysical inquiry can have important ramifications on other areas of philosophy. In my Metaphysics class that I took junior year, we examined all these topics, and wrote forum posts on each reading as well as a final paper.
