Philosophy of Science

Philosophy of science is an epistemological field. It questions how we know what we know about science. How are theories developed and how are they proved? What differentiates the science from the humanities? 'Hard sciences' from 'soft sciences'? How do we come to accept scientific theories as a society, and what do we do when they change? In general, what evidence do we have for believing in science? This course was very interesting as it was also an exploration of the history of science. The way certain hypotheses and theories emerged is often very different from what we learn in textbooks. Science is messy and hard to follow - the 'scientific method' is often nonexistent. This course was taught by Professor George Smith, a true genius when it comes to history and philosophical facts, and able to improve our understanding through his background as an mechanical engineer. For this course, I wrote four short papers for this class - they are compiled below.
